We almost considered not going to Disneyland today because of the hot weather yesterday. But, there was a slight cloud cover and, although the humidity was up, the temperature was down to a more respectable mid nineties. So, hi ho, hi ho. . .
On entering the Disneyland theme park, I was immediately struck by its visual impact. I thought I was going to see a midway such as I’ve experienced at the PNE or CNE or Canada’s Wonderland only with bigger and better rides. What I actually encountered was a town with several subdivisions or “lands” that all met at a central square, thematic architecture in each “land” that only a person with incredible imagination and vision could create, rides and attractions also in theme, very special citizens including a big mouse in fancy dress and two big dogs with floppy ears, and dreamlike colour and sound that soon transport every child and childlike adult into “the happiest place on earth”.
Rides are not my thing. Quite frankly, they scare me. I’m the one you’ll see at the bottom of the ride holding hats and purses and taking pictures. But, today, I stepped out of my comfort zone and although reluctant at first enjoyed several exciting attractions including Pirates of the Caribbean – twice – and the Indiana Jones ride. Of course, we also included It’s a Small World.
We had a wonderful dinner at Blue Bayou in the New Orleans quarter. The chef came to our table to consult with Frank about his gluten free diet and helped him make healthy selections. This attention, together with the excellent food and service, was well worth the higher price point.
It was an expensive day, but rejuvenating. You can’t help being rejuvenated when you spend your day with the likes of Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Pluto.
Until tomorrow. . .
